What happens to my international investments if my beneficiary passes away before I do?
If a beneficiary passes away before you:
- Their share is generally reallocated to surviving beneficiaries, unless you selected “per stirpes”, which allows their share to pass to their descendants.
- If all beneficiaries pass away before you, the account assets become part of your estate.
- If it’s unclear whether a beneficiary survived you by at least 120 hours, they are treated as having predeceased you.
To ensure your wishes are carried out, it’s important to review and update your TOD beneficiaries as life events occur. Please note that submitting a new form automatically replaces any prior TOD beneficiary designations.
